Denial of Service Attacks and CDNs like Cloudflare

At Triton Technologies, security is in the forefront of our mind on every level. That includes stuff and technologies that we do not have direct access to or complements our client’s networks. One of those such complementary services is web hosting and web page public facing servers.

The Rise of Denial of Service Attack Services

Over the last couple months, we noticed a tremendous amount of malware infecting people’s incredibly and WordPress-based websites.

What we’ve also noticed is the proliferation of cheap denial-of-service (DoS) attack services that can help take our competitor’s website. Such black-market services are cheap. For $20 an hour, you can deny a competitor’s website from operating. May not seem like a lot of time, but when you know that they are doing a demonstration, nothing is more embarrassing when it completely flops.

Cloudflare and Content Distribution Networks

All the above reasons are why at Triton technologies, we recommend Cloudflare. Cloudflare is a content distribution network (CDN), sometimes known as a content delivery network.

What is a CDN? A CDN is a large array of multiple hosted server farms that single service purpose. Your website is replicated online through hundreds if not thousands of servers worldwide in dozens of different countries. Why is this important? If 1 million requests suddenly hit your website, a 2nd denial of service attack comes in. It can be forced through all of the servers and legitimate customers will be able to get their request through as if nothing happened. This is tremendously useful for clients with web-based programs, services, and products.

Other Perks of CDNs

It also changes the public face of your website. Instead of it going to a single server where most websites are, it distributes them through all the servers. It masks the original server. Viruses, malware, hacks cannot penetrate because the servers don’t actually host anything at the administrative or database level. It makes them very resilient. For the starting basic package of $20, it is extremely worth the benefit.
